Your EOS® Tools Aren’t Broken—Your Saboteurs Are Running the Show

November 4, 2025 Guest User

By Lynsey Peterson

The Entrepreneurial Operating System® provides a clear framework for scaling businesses of all shapes and sizes. I love how it systemizes businesses, bringing clarity and objectivity to everything from long-term strategy to day-to-day operations.

But here's what I see again and again: Even teams that are rocking EOS (ha!) trip over themselves and suffer setbacks. They've read Traction. They run L10s every week. They have Rocks and a Scorecard.

So why are they still stuck in the same patterns?

The Hidden Blocker No One Talks About

Like all simple but deep frameworks, the challenge comes in applying EOS tools coherently and consistently. And that's where Leadership Team members get in their own way.

Last month, a Visionary told me: "We've been running on EOS for two years, but I'm still working 60-hour weeks."

Here's what 20+ years in leadership has taught me: EOS gives you world-class tools. But the tools don't work as well as they can when your inner saboteurs are running the show.

Your Saboteurs Are Undermining Excellent Tools

This is where Positive Intelligence® (PQ) changes everything. Developed by Shirzad Chamine, PQ reveals how we all have mental "saboteurs" - automatic negative thought patterns that hijack our best intentions. They're not character flaws - they're neural pathways that once protected us but now limit us.

I see it constantly:

Stuck in Avoider? It's easy to find "more important" things to do rather than take that needed Clarity Break.

Controller or Stickler saboteur? It's hard to Delegate and Elevate when you're the only one who can do it right.

Restless saboteur? You'll tune out during IDS when you think it takes too long to find the root issue.

Judge saboteur? Your People Analyzer becomes a weapon for criticism instead of development.

Your leadership team isn't struggling because EOS doesn't work. They're struggling because their saboteurs are blocking their implementation.

So What Do We Do?

We come back to center and shift our mindsets with simple mindfulness techniques.

Start by noticing when something feels unnecessarily difficult. Let your team know you're struggling. Take a break to breathe. Sometimes it's quick - you find a clear path ahead. Often it takes more, maybe a Same Page Meeting to unpack challenges together.

Here's the counterintuitive part: We lean into difficulty by saying what we're afraid to admit. When we come back to our Sage (inner wisdom), we find an easier pathway through.

I recently worked with a leadership team whose Rock completion was stuck at 40%. We discovered their collective Perfectionist saboteurs made 80% feel like failure. Once they could name it - "That's our Perfectionist talking" - everything shifted. We added a 2-minute centering practice before finalizing Rocks. Result? 85% completion the next quarter.

The Real Journey

We create compelling 10-Year Targets, but not just to reach that specific destination. There's no happily ever after where all problems are solved.

There's something better: The ongoing journey. Doing work we love while making a positive impact together.

Your organization can only be as healthy as your Leadership Team. And your Leadership Team can only be as effective as their ability to recognize and overcome their inner saboteurs.

Your Next Step

As you prepare for your next Level 10 and an important issue has been on your list for more than three weeks, ask: "Which saboteur is keeping this here?"

Watch how naming the pattern changes the conversation.
